Resumption of R&D activities in 2021
About 26.0 billion euros were spent on intra-mural R&D in 2021, 3.8% more than the previous year.
R&D spending by public institutions (+9.7%) and universities (+7.9%) is growing and the increase in private non-profit institutions (+1.9%) remains constant.
On the other hand, companies seem to have only partially overcome the pandemic crisis: the expenditure they have incurred overall increases by just 1.1%. The good resilience is attributable to large companies (+3.8%), while SME spending fell markedly (-4.5%).
For 2022, preliminary data indicate a reduction in corporate R&D spending of 2.9% compared to 2021. Signs of recovery are estimated for 2023(+5.2% on 2022).
